Scout and Explorers Skills Camp at Coxwood

This weekend is built around the skills that define Scouting. Here is what is on offer: Shooting Get behind an air rifle and put your focus and patience to the test on the range, under the supervision of a qualified instructor. Tomahawk Throwing A highlight of the weekend. Learn the technique, find your stance, and send a tomahawk spinning into the target. Archery Take aim with a recurve bow and work on your accuracy under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Axe and Saw Learn how to use tools safely and effectively in the field, from felling small timber to processing wood for the fire. Lashing and Pioneering Use spars and rope to build structures from scratch. A classic Scout skill that never gets old. Knife Work and Whittling Learn safe knife handling and put it to use carving something you can take home with you. Fire Lighting No matches. Flint and steel, bow drill, and natural tinder. If Explorers want the real challenge, the primitive methods come first. Bushcraft Shelter building, natural navigation, plant identification, and animal tracking. The wild is full of information if you know how to read it. Navigation Map, compass, and nothing else. No phones, no apps. Learn to read the ground and find your way using grid references and bearings. Backwards Cooking Your Saturday lunch, cooked by you, on an open fire, with limited kit and instructions in the wrong order. Good luck. Operation Dark Scout When the campfire dies down on Saturday night, the real challenge begins. Navigate a course in the dark, complete survival challenges at each checkpoint, and find your way back to camp before midnight.
